Texans Water Heaters – Homeowner Guide
Tools You’ll Need
-
Flathead screwdriver
-
One or two drain hoses (we recommend heavy-duty hoses)
-
Towels for any water spills
-
Know where your home’s main shut-off valve is in case of emergency
Step-by-Step Flushing Process
Step 1: Lower the temperature
Turn the water heater thermostat to pilot mode or the lowest temperature setting.
Step 2: Connect the drain hose
Take your drain hose to the water heater (attic, garage, or utility room).
Connect the hose securely to the drain valve at the bottom of the heater.
Step 3: Route the hose to a safe location
We recommend running the hose outside the home.
If that’s not possible, you can place it inside a bathtub.
Step 4: Prepare to open the drain valve
Use a flathead screwdriver to open the drain valve.
Before turning it on:
-
Make sure someone is watching the inside connection.
-
Make sure someone is watching the end of the hose.
This prevents:
-
Scalding water outside
-
The hose slipping out
-
The tub overflowing
Step 5: Flush the heater
Open the drain valve and let the water run for about 15 minutes,
or until the water runs clear.
Step 6: Shut down and restore settings
-
Close the drain valve completely.
-
Check for any leaks.
-
Disconnect the hose.
-
Clean up any water.
-
Turn the thermostat back to the normal hot setting.
-
Roll up and store the hoses.
